“Mounting Buzz” Of Browns Signing QB Robert Griffin III, Possibly This Week

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports continues to hear “mounting buzz” about the Browns signing free agent QB Robert Griffin III.

  • According to La Canfora, it would not be a surprise if a deal came together at some point this week.
  • La Canfora adds that if the Browns were to sign RGIII, there would be interest in veteran QB Josh McCown from other teams including the Broncos, Jets and Rams.
  • Beyond that, La Canfora could still see them drafting a quarterback to develop.

Last we heard, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported this past weekend that the Browns were making calls to people who know RGIII as a player and his character.

This came just a few days after the Browns brought Griffin in for a visit.

The Jets, Broncos, 49ers and Rams have also come up as potential options for RGIII, but neither of them have scheduled a visit with the former No. 2 overall pick up to this point.

It’s worth mentioning that signing RGIII to a contract wouldn’t factor into a team’s 2017 compensatory picks.

Griffin, 25, is a former Rookie of the Year and No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. The Redskins traded a huge package of draft picks to get him, but he fell out of favor in Washington, which led to the Redskins using him as their No. 3 quarterback in order to prevent an injury that would guarantee his 2016 salary.

Last May, Washington elected to pick up his fifth-year option worth $16.2 million last year, but they made the obvious move and cut him loose before this salary became guaranteed a few weeks ago.

In 2014, Griffin appeared in nine games and threw for 1,694 yards while completing 68.7 percent of his passes to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions.

We have him featured in our Best Available Free Agents list.
