NFL Notes: Overtime, Eagles, Vikings

Overtime

  • Jason Cole of B/R reports that several NFL coaches are “annoyed” by the reports that the NFL are likely to reduce the overtime period from 15 minutes to 10 for the 2017 season.
  • According to Cole, the coaches believe it’s an “unnecessary” move, given the limited number of overtime games played.
  • Cole believes this rule change could lead to the team with the first possession milking the clock, even if they only come away with a field goal.

Eagles

  • Matt Lombardo of NJ.com writes that the Eagles’ plan at running back still appears to be a running back by committee approach.
  • Lombardo mentions that Darren Sproles‘ $4 million cap figure at least opens the possibility for him to be a roster cut this summer.
  • According to Lombardo, newly signed LeGarrette Blount and Wendell Smallwood appear to be “focal points” of the Eagles’ running back committee.
  • In regards to the receiver position, Lombardo says “it seems like a foregone conclusion that Dorial Green-Beckham will be the first wide receiver to go.”
  • Lombardo expects former first-round WR Nelson Agholor to get another shot to prove his worth, as it would cost the Eagles $4,684,309 in dead money to cut him.
  • Lombardo doesn’t consider free agent CB Darrelle Revis to be a good fit for the Eagles, given his age, recent off-the-field issues and the fact that he doesn’t profile as the kind of cornerback they would target.

Vikings

Vikings HC Mike Zimmer believes newly signed WR Michael Floyd has a “good support system” in Minnesota that should help him moving forward.

“We understand [his legal history]. We always try to weigh every situation,” Zimmer said, via Ben Goessling of ESPN. “But you know, he’s from here. I think he has a good support system with [former Notre Dame teammates] Harrison Smith and Kyle Rudolph, partly. A lot of those things were factored into it.

As for picking up the Vikings’ offensive system, Zimmer doesn’t see this being much of an issue for Floyd.

Michael’s a very, very intelligent person, so I don’t think he’ll have any problem catching on to the system or anything like that,” Zimmer said. “But to get out here and do it, and be around the other guys, and be around the quarterbacks, I think that will help him.”
