NFL Rumors: Coaching Options

San Francisco 49ers:

In an unsurprising move, the 49ers released Mike Singletary following the teams loss to the St Louis Rams. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula will take over for the final game of the season.

ESPN’s Mike Sando reports that the 49ers ownership plans on hiring a new general manager to help with the coaching search.

As of now the top targets for the coaching position are John Harbaugh and John Gruden but neither has given any indication that they are interested.

Miami Dolphins:

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald mentioned last week that Tony Sparano hasn’t gotten a vote of confidence from owner Stephen Ross. The Dolphins terrible home record (1-7) is likely to be one of the biggest reasons why the Dolphins will most likely move on from Sparano.

ESPN’s John Clayton mentions that the team will likely look to John Gruden or Bill Cowher to reinvigorate the teams fan base.

Houston Texans:

The Texans fast start has been followed by an equally disappointing second half which cannot help Gary Kubiak’s chances of returning next season.

Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle writes that Kubiak’s firing appears to be inevitable following Sunday’s loss to the Broncos. Considering that the Texans defense is one of the worst defenses of all time should be as good of a reason as any to start the rebuilding process.

Cowher has already expressed interest in the position which seems like the best case scenario for a terrible defense that has some pieces in place on the offensive side of the ball.

Kubiak continues to be linked to the Denver Broncos because of history with the organization.

Tennessee Titans:

Now that the Titans are officially out of the playoffs, the organization can focus on preparing for the 2011 season. As of now it’s still unclear whether Jeff Fisher and Vince Young will be able to repair their relationship like owner Bud Adams would like.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen suggests that Fisher is likely to be a “hot commodity” this offseason is he becomes available. Fisher could end up being options the Texans and Cowboys if those position end up being available.

New York Giants:

The speculation surrounding Tom Coughlins future in New York is likely to grow not that the team is in a position to miss the playoffs. Missing the playoffs is one thing but getting blown out is a must win game doesn’t bode well for the coaching staff.

ESPN’s Matt Mosley writes that despite missing the playoffs, Tom Coughlin is likely to finish out the remainder of his contract and return to the team for the 2011 season.

There have been several rumors that the Giants coaching job sits atop Bill Cowhers list of ideal coaching positions. Landing Cowher would be hard for any team to pass up given his track record of success.
