Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Panthers DC Sean McDermott is already expected to be among the most sought after head-coaching candidates after the season, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise considering what he’s done with the defense in Carolina.
However, what could put him over the top as a candidate, according to La Canfora, is pairing him with current Chargers HC Mike McCoy, and having McCoy take over as his offensive coordinator.
Of course, this would require the Chargers to move on from McCoy after the season is out, but recent reports have said that he’s likely on the hot seat now that San Diego appear to be playing for the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft.
According to La Canfora, adding McCoy to McDerrmott’s staff would remove any potential fears about the strength of his offensive coaches and further bolster his standing as a hot candidate in a year.
Both McCoy and McDermott have worked together in Carolina, so there’s some history between the two.
In the end, La Canfora can see McDermott interviewing for 4-6 head coaching jobs next year.
