Patriots DC Matt Patricia Expected To Interview For Lions’ Job

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Patriots DC Matt Patricia is expected to interview for the Lions’ head coach job in the coming days.

Rapoport adds that there will, of course, be other candidates for the position but hiring Patricia could allow them to keep their respected offensive staff in place.

Patricia has come up a few times in connection to the Lions’ job, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

• Mike Silver of NFL Media reported a few days ago that Patricia would be the “leading candidate” for Lions head coach position if they fire HC Jim Caldwell.
• Alex Marvez of the Sporting News first mentioned that there has been speculation going around in league circles that Patricia could be headed to the Lions as a replacement to Caldwell. A

There are obvious ties between the Lions and Patricia, considering that GM Bob Quinn spent a number of years working together while they were in New England.

Patricia, 43, began his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant for the Patriots back in 2004. He has held a number of position during his 14 years in New England including assistant offensive line coach, linebackers coach, and safeties coach before he was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2012.

This year, the Patriots’ defense ranks No. 29 in total allowed yards, No. 20 in rushing yards allowed and No. 30 in passing yards allowed and No. 5 in total points allowed.
