Redskins Name Kirk Cousins Starting QB For Week 1

Update:

Redskins HC Jay Gruden announced Monday that Kirk Cousins will, in fact, be the team’s starting quarterback.

“I think all three quarterbacks should be commended for their efforts, their willingness to get better,” Gruden said. “But when it’s all said and done … we feel like at this time Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win.”

Gruden added that they still believe in Robert Griffin III.

We believe in Robert,” Gruden said. “It’s a good problem to have to have three quarterbacks that are competing and working their butts off.”

According to Gruden: “There have been no discussion of letting [RGIII] go.”

Dianna Marie Russini reports that the Redskins have named Kirk Cousins starting quarterback for Week 1.

Indications have been that Cousins was likely to be under center for the start of the regular season, as Robert Griffin III has yet to be officially cleared by an independent neurologist.

Last night, Russini reported that the Redskins were split within the organization regarding RGIII, and had already attempted to move him via trade. However, they haven’t found any interest from other NFL teams due to his 2016 salary of around $16 million.

Cousins finished the third preseason game completing 20-of-27 passes for 190 yards to go along with a touchdown and an interception.
