Texans Promote QB Taylor Heinicke From Practice Squad

According to Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texans have promoted QB Taylor Heinicke from their practice squad to the active roster on Thursday.

Texans HC Bill O’Brien said on Wednesday that he expected Heinicke to be promoted in time for Week 15, given that Tom Savage is still dealing with a concussion, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

Heinicke, 24, wound up signing on with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion back in May of 2015. He managed to make the 53-man roster during his rookie season but wasn’t active for a single game.

The Vikings wound up placing him on the non-football injury list at the start of the 2016 season with an ankle injury, but brought him back in November. Unfortunately, the Vikings elected to waive Heinicke with an injury designation coming out of the preseason before waiving him with an injury settlement.

Heinicke had a brief stint on the Patriots’ practice squad and then signed with the Texans’ practice squad a couple weeks ago.

Heinicke has yet to appear in an NFL game.
