The 49ers have made the decision to bench QB Jimmy Garoppolo for the second half of Sunday’s game against the Dolphins and will instead go with C.J. Beathard.
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told field reporter Lindsay Czarniak that the decision to go with Beathard is to โprotectโ Garoppolo.
San Francisco put together a terrible first half and our down 30-7 to Miami, so it probably makes sense to not risk an injury to Garoppolo and see what Beathard can do with an extended opportunity.
Garoppolo just returned from a high ankle injury that cost him two games.
Garoppolo, 28, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014. The Patriots traded him to the 49ers in 2017 at the trade deadline in return for a 2018 second-round pick.
Garoppolo was in line to be an unrestricted free agent when the 49ers signed him to a five-year, $137.5 million contract during the 2018 offseason.
Entering today’s game, Garoppolo had appeared in two games for the 49ers and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 390 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
