According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, you can expect to hear “a ton” or rumors about 49ers HC Chip Kelly returning to college football in the coming weeks.
La Canfora mentions that a number of the top NCAA programs will begin to start putting out feelers for potential coaching hires including LSU, Texas, Oregon and Penn State all worth keeping an eye on.
Interestingly enough, La Canfora says that he’s spoken to several coaches around the league who expect Kelly to leave his current job with the 49ers and return to the college game before his head-coaching stock drops even more.
“He just keeps running the same shit and it isn’t fooling anybody,” one NFL executive told La Canfora. “Do you think they could bring him back to Oregon?”
It’s not all that common for an NFL coach to give up his job, but there are some examples like Bobby Petrino several years ago with the Falcons.
Of course, there’s always a chance that the 49ers and Kelly could come to some “mutual” agreement to part ways next year.
Since taking the Eagles’ head-coaching job back in 2013, Kelly has produced a record of 27-26 (50.9 percent) as an NFL head coach including one playoff appearance while he was with the Eagles.
We’ll have more regarding Kelly and a potential return to college as the news is available.
