Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, citing league sources, reports that the 49ers have opened contract talks with RB Carlos Hyde regarding an extension.ย However, La Canfora says that this couldย prove to be a “tricky” situation.
Hyde is in line to be an unrestricted free agent next year and theย 2018ย class of running backs won’t be as deep as it was last year. Beyond that, it’s unlikely the 49ers would use their franchise tag on Hyde, given that value of the running back position.
Injuries remain a concern for Hyde, but La Canfora’s sources have said that 49ers GM John Lynch is high on his ability and would like to sign him to an extension.
La Canfora mentions that Hyde’s best move could be to bet on himself and play out the year, as opposed to agreeing to a deal right now.
Hyde, 27, is a former second-round pick of the 49ers back in 2014. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $3.681 million contract and set to make a base salary of $822,047 for the 2017 season.
In 2017, Hyde has appeared in four games and rushed for 321 yards on 65 carries (4.9 YPC) to go along with 17 receptions for 88 yards receiving and two touchdowns.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 56 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding Hyde as the news is available.
