According to Matt Maiocco, 49ers QB Nick Mullens will need surgery on his right elbow following his injury from this past week.
With just two games left, that likely will knock Mullens out for the rest of 2020. Ian Rapoport reports 49ers RB Raheem Mostert also suffered another high-ankle sprain and is out for the rest of the season.
Expect the 49ers to place Mostert on injured reserve shortly, per Tom Pelissero.
Mullens, 25, wound up signing on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Miss back in 2017. He was waived coming out of the preseason and later added to their practice squad.
The 49ers brought Mullens back on a futures contract in 2018 only to release him at the start of the regular season. Mullens had a brief stint on their practice squad before being called up following Jimmy Garoppolo‘s season-ending knee injury.
He re-signed as an exclusive rights free agent this past offseason.
In 2020, Mullens appeared in 10 games for the 49ers and completed 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,437 yards, 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Mostert, 28, wound up signing on with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Purdue back in 2015. He had brief stints with the Dolphins, Ravens, Browns, Jets and Bears before signing on to the 49ers’ practice squad in 2016.
The 49ers brought Mostert back on a one-year exclusive rights contract in 2018 before tendering him a restricted offer in 2019. He later signed a three-year, $8.7 million extension with San Francisco.
However, the two parties agreed to a restructured contract this summer.
In 2020, Mostert appeared in eight games for the 49ers and rushed for 521 yards on 104 carries (5.0 YPC) and two touchdowns to go along with 16 receptions for 156 yards and another touchdown.
