49ers HC Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that they will keep DL Arik Armstead‘s for the 2019 season and have him play out the year under the fifth-year option, per Matt Barrows.
Armstead had come up as a potential cap casualty this offseason or a candidate to have his contract restructured. However, it sounds like the 49ers plan to carry him at his current salary and see how he does.
The fifth-year option will cost the 49ers $9 million for the 2019 season.
Armstead, 25, is a former first-round pick out of Oregon by the 49ers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He was in the final year of his four-year, $9.84 rookie contract when the 49ers elected to pick up Armstead’s fifth-year option last year.
Armstead will be an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
In 2018, Armstead appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and recorded 48 tackles and three sacks.
