According to Ian Rapoport, 49ers WR Deebo Samuel suffered a broken foot Tuesday during workouts with teammates in Nashville.
Rapoport says it’s a Jones fracture for Samuel and he’s having surgery today. He adds Samuel is expected to be back on the field early in the season with an estimated recovery timeline of 12-16 weeks.
That would put Samuel’s return sometime in September, making it likely he misses all of training camp and the preseason. Dr. David Chao believes a stint on the PUP list is coming for Samuel.
This is an unfortunate setback for Samuel, who was entering his second season poised to step into a role as San Francisco’s No. 1 receiver.
Samuel, 24, was the No. 36 overall pick by the 49ers out of South Carolina in 2019. He’s entering the second year of a four-year, $7,697,356 rookie contract that includes a $3,618,076 signing bonus.
In 2019, Samuel appeared in 15 games for the 49ers and caught 57 passes for 802 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 14 rush attempts for 159 yards and another three touchdowns.
We’ll have more on Samuel as the news is available.
