A source involved in the situation tells Ian Rapoport of NFL Media that Packers QB Aaron Rodgers‘ broken collarbone still isn’t 100 percent healed.
“It’s not 100 percent healed,” said Rapoport’s source. “But it’s looking really good. Any time you’re going through the final maturation, then weighing estimates and pixels on a CT scan or MRI, there’s a decision. Everyone is concerned, as you can imagine. But everyone is ecstatic about the way the shoulder looks. There is a significant and robust enough physical response that we could put him in position to make a decision.”
“No one can say with 100 percent certainty that it’s healed,” the source added. “There is risk where it was broken and where it was fixed. You have to look at it, when a player plays a high-risk sport, look at the relative risk vs. a normal person. And what happens with the worst-case scenario? What’s the solution?”
As others have explained, Rodgers’ shoulder is strong enough for him to play, even if it’s at just 80 percent. For a collarbone to fully heal, it typically requires months, so it’s not all that surprising to hear that he still isn’t 100 percent right now.
A separateย source explained to Rapoport that the entire organization had to come to an agreement on his return, considering Rodgers’ importance to the organization and the fact he’ll likely sign a long-term extension with the team this offseason.
“It’s nice if everyone agrees,” said Rapoport’s source. “But with a guy of this magnitude, and considering he’s going to sign the biggest contract in NFL history this offseason, there were a lot of different voices. Trust me, no one is sleeping well on Saturday … except Aaron.”
The Packers officially activated Rodgers from the injured reserve list on Saturday.
Rodgers suffered a displaced collarbone fracture that required two plates and 13 screws inserted to help solidify the fracture and accelerate the healing process.
Rodgers, 34, is a former first-round pick of the Packers back in 2005. He’s currently in the fifth year of his seven-year, $130.75 million contract that included $54 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $12.55 million and $19.8 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2017, Rodgers appeared in six games for the Packers and thrown for 1,675 yards while completing 64.7 percent of his passes to go along with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He has also rushed for 126 yards.
