Jets
- In a report from CNN, Jets owner Woody Johnson, who’s currently on leave from the team serving as the U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom, was investigated by the State Department for a number of allegations, including racist and sexist remarks and using his position to benefit President Donald Trump’s personal businesses overseas.
- The main thrust of the investigation were allegations Johnson lobbied to have the British Open moved to one of Trump’s properties after being asked by the president.
- However, it was also revealed Johnson, ahead of a 2018 event for Black History Month, asked why the Black community wanted a separate month to celebrate their history and argued the “real challenge” was Black fathers not remaining with their families.
- Other sources said Johnson regularly commented inappropriately on the appearance of women he worked with, indicated he preferred working with women rather than men because they were cheaper and worked harder, and pushed back against doing “a feminist event” for International Women’s Day.
- Johnson did not deny the allegations when asked for comment by CNN, though he later tweeted a denial in his statement: “I have followed the ethical rules and requirements of my office at all times. These false claims of insensitive remarks about race and gender are totally inconsistent with my longstanding record and values.”
- Jets S Jamal Adams responded to the news, tweeting, “We need the RIGHT people at the top. Wrong is wrong!”
- Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports there was a “mini-panic” within the Jets organization in 2017 after Johnson liked a pair of racy photos on his personal Instagram account which had also been used for official team business.
