AFC Notes: Broncos, Raiders, Titans

Broncos

Denver Broncos TE Jake Butt says rehab from his third torn ACL is going well.

“I can’t go [practice], but I’m getting closer,” Butt said, via the Denver Post. “I’m about five months out right now. But rehab is going really well. I’m feeling great, and I know the trainers are feeling good about where I’m at.”

Raiders

The Raiders might not have an answer on if RB Marshawn Lynch is returning to the team until after the draft.

“We have a big question at running back,” GM Mike Mayock said via ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez.  “Both parties have to wait for the draft and see what happens there.”

  • Mayock said the Raiders weren’t in on LB Justin Houston, but the team is aware of how much they need defensive end help: “As Jon (Gruden) says, ‘right now it’s just Arden Key and me.” (Scott Bair)
  • Per Michael Gehlken, the NFL owners unanimously approved the Raiders stadium lease to stay in Oakland until the Las Vegas relocation.
  • Mayock says DC Paul Guenther banged the table for LB Vontaze Burfict, ultimately winning him over.  (Bair)

Titans

While Titans HC Mike Vrabel made it clear the team traded for QB Ryan Tannehill as a backup to starting QB Marcus Mariota, he added that competition is never a bad thing.

“I’ll tell you a quick story about my career, and I try not to reference it much,” Vrabel said via Jim Wyatt of the team site. “But I went to training camp one year, and … I called (my wife) Jen and said, ‘Man, there’s like seven guys who have started in this league in the linebacker room.’ And she said, ‘Well, you better practice hard and play hard’.… And I was like, ‘I love you, too, baby.'”

“The message is it’s understood we’re going to put as many guys on the roster as possible that can compete and help us win,” Vrabel continued. “It only makes guys better.  Obviously if Marcus is healthy, and he’s available, he’s our starter. We just felt like, to be able to strengthen the position, to have a chance to add a player like Ryan, who could help us if Marcus isn’t available, then we were excited to do so.”
