AFC Notes: Colts, Dayo Odeyingbo, Texans

Colts

Colts HC Frank Reich does not think the Eagles drafting Jalen Hurts contributed to Carson Wentz‘s downfall in Philadelphia, but that he became the “focal point” of their poor performance in 2020.

โ€œI donโ€™t think thatโ€™s the case. Thatโ€™s how I feel about it. Thatโ€™s my opinion, that I donโ€™t think the drafting of another player sent Carson in a tailspin,โ€ Reich said, via The Rich Eisen Show. โ€œI think itโ€™s complicated. I think it was a lot of different dynamics. When you win or lose in this league, everybody should share in the success and everybody should share in the blame. It usually doesnโ€™t work that way. The quarterback, head coach, whoever, GMs tend to be the focal point. So Carson took his share of being the focal point of the blame, and thatโ€™s part of the process of being a quarterback in this league. And youโ€™ve got to be a big boy and youโ€™ve got to be able to take it.”

Dayo Odeyingbo

While preparing for the Senior Bowl, eventual Colts second-round DE Dayo Odeyingbo suffered a torn Achilles in January. The injury typically takes a little under a year to rehab and potentially longer before an athlete returns to their prior peak. It would be cutting it close for Odeyingbo to return to the field this season but that’s the goal right now.

โ€œThe goal is to be back playing this year,โ€ Odeyingbo said via J.J. Stankevitz of the teamโ€™s website. โ€œSo thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m working towards and thatโ€™ll play out how it plays out. . . . Obviously everybody wants to get back as fast as possible, but you have to with these injuries [go about it] the right way and donโ€™t want to push anything too hard, kind of make it worse or kind or mess up your future or set you back. So Iโ€™m working hard to get back as fast as possible, but Iโ€™m definitely being careful with the whole situation.โ€

Texans

Opinions around the league were split on how the Texans did with their few picks in this year’s draft. Houston used its first selection in the third round on Stanford QB Davis Mills, which raised eyebrows given the Texans’ obvious drama at the position.

โ€œTheir situation is such a mess,โ€ an exec said via the Athletic’s Mike Sando. โ€œA lot of people do like Mills as a starter. I saw him more as a No. 2. People think heโ€™s ultra-smart, which he may be, but I didnโ€™t necessarily see it on tape. Sometimes those guys at Stanford and Duke, people just assume they are the smartest guys in the room, but he made some bad decisions. He does have a good arm, he does flash some NFL throws. I see what they saw. I just didnโ€™t see it to the starter level. (Kyle) Trask, to me, was much more accurate, better decision-maker, heโ€™s bigger.โ€

Reich believes Wentz has an opportunity to “hit the reset button” on his career in Indianapolis.

โ€œNow is an opportunity to hit the reset button. Itโ€™s an opportunity for the Eagles to [hit] the reset button. And โ€ฆ thereโ€™s nothing I want more than to see the Eagles succeed and this be a win-win for both teams โ€” that Jalen Hurts is successful, itโ€™s all good. I love great quarterback play, but Iโ€™m glad we got our guy.โ€
