AFC Notes: Fernando Mendoza, Sean Payton, John Spytek, Broncos, Raiders

Broncos

  • Broncos HC Sean Payton is going to “tune out” criticism about not making massive free agency moves: “There was a lot of angst when we selected Bo (Nix).” (Chris Tomasson)
  • Payton said he’s “disappointed internally” that it didn’t work out with LB Dre Greenlaw: “That was a tough one. He’s so passionate.” (Tomasson)
  • After re-signing RB J.K. Dobbins, Payton spoke on his impact as a leader: J.K. Dobbins was a priority. Above all others. He brings ten players along with him. He had a big impact last year.” (Peter Schrager)
  • Payton outlined what they are getting in new WR Jaylen Waddle, but isn’t concerned with labeling someone as the No. 1 receiver: “He’s explosive. He’s dynamic. … I think you’ll see him play inside in the slot, he’ll play outside.” (Tomasson)
  • He also revealed QBs Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger will have a competition for the backup QB job: “There’s nothing etched in stone.” (Tomasson)
  • Payton mentioned OLB Jonah Elliss will take some snaps at inside LB after operating as a pass rusher and defensive lineman last year. (Tomasson)
  • Oregon G Emmanuel Pregnon visited the Broncos. He’s from Denver and counts as a local prospect. (Mike Klis)

Raiders

  • Raiders GM John Spytek brought up the idea of adding a backup QB in the upcoming weeks. (Vincent Bonsignore)
  • Spytek also revealed he will continue to have talks with DE Maxx Crosby about snap counts to keep him fresh: “I have a lot of respect for how much he loves to play, and wanting to be out there all the time. But I think at some point, the law of diminishing returns kicks in on everybody. I don’t think signing Kwitty Paye, resigning Tyree Wilson, and having Tyree Wilson is going to make Maxx want to play less.” (Ryan McFadden)
  • Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza met with the Raiders’ brass after his pro day. (Jeff Howe)

Raiders

It’s largely been a conclusion that the Raiders will take Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. When speaking at the NFL owners’ meetings, GM John Spytek said they are still going through the pre-draft process with Mendoza.

“We are going to go through the process,” Spytek said, via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN. “We are going to his pro day on Wednesday. He’s going to come in for a top-30 visit. We’re going to have a couple more Zooms that we still have to do with him, and a lot of other prospects, too.”

As for the offensive tackle position, Spytek said they are open to taking a player at the position with one of their 10 draft picks, with hopes of developing them into an eventual starter.

“You’re not typically signing a guy that you’re just going to plug in and play [offensive] tackle,” Spytek said, via ESPN’s Ryan McFadden. “It’s really challenging to do, and that’s why you [have] to draft those guys and develop them and then re-sign them.”
