AFC South Notes: Colts, Jaguars, Texans, Titans

Colts

Colts S Malik Hooker said he is fully recovered from his knee injury and could have played in Week 6’s game against the Texans, but they’re “just being smart and cautious.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m playing this week,โ€ Hooker said, via George Bremer of The Herald Bulletin. โ€œMe, personally, Iโ€™d have played last week if theyโ€™d allowed me to. But it was just being smart and cautious.โ€

Hooker added that he was “very close” to playing in Week 6 but there was “no point” in risking a setback this early into the season.

โ€œI was very close,โ€ Hooker said. โ€œ(But) thereโ€™s no point this early in the season in trying to go out there and risking a setback, especially how early I was in the process.โ€

  • Colts HC Frank Reich said WR Devin Funchess (collarbone) could make his official return from the injured reserve list next week: โ€œWeโ€™re going to be patient with him and the whole timing thing. So Devin will probably not go this week; itโ€™ll probably be next week.โ€ (Colts.com)
  • Albert Breer reports that Colts DB Quincy Wilson has come up in trade talks. Breer notes that Wilson has been beaten out by a younger player.

Jaguars

  • Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Jaguars are looking to trade for pass catchers, despite dealing standout CB Jalen Ramsey to the Rams a few weeks ago.
  • La Canfora mentions that Jacksonville could be a landing spot for Robby Anderson, who is among the available receivers.

Texans

Texans’ veteran CB Johnathan Joseph said he is confident that he will be able to play through his shoulder injury in Week 7 against the Raiders.

“Absolutely, not the first time having this thing,” Joseph said, via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. “I know how to deal with it and know how to migrate my way throughout the week. Later in the week is the big tell. Right now, I’m on track.”

Texans HC Bill O’Brien does not think they have an advantage with recently acquired CB Gareon Conley in their Week 7 matchup against the Raiders since he still has to learn their scheme.

โ€œI donโ€™t think there is that much of an advantage because I think that Gareon is coming in here and is going to have to learn what we do,โ€ Oโ€™Brien said, via Scott Bair of NBC Sports. โ€œKind of how our scheme works, how we meet, how we walk through, just kind of how we do things and thereโ€™s not going to be a lot of time for anything other than that. I donโ€™t think you can read too much into it. Itโ€™s pro football, thatโ€™s the way things work sometimes. Sometimes you make a trade and you end up playing that team the very next week.โ€)

  • Albert Breer reports that the Texans attempted to trade for Broncos CB Chris Harris before they acquired Gareon Conley from the Raiders.

Titans

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill said their receiver’s performance in last week’s game gives him “more confidence” in players like Corey Davis and A.J. Brown.

โ€œI hope it gives them some confidence,โ€ Tannehill said. โ€œI canโ€™t speak for them on what they feel, but I know I have more confidence now throwing to those guys after seeing them go make contested catches in traffic. Corey (Davis) early in the game, A.J. (Brown) throughout the game just being able to attack the football and go get it. I told them like, โ€˜Hey, you guys get open, Iโ€™m going to throw it. You guys attack the football and make plays,โ€™ and they did that.”

Titans WR Adam Humphries credits their trust in Tannehill to the work put in during the offseason.

โ€œWe build that trust in training camp and OTAs and practice, and we had a good feeling with Ryan and Marcus,โ€ Humphries said. โ€œTo go out there in a game, to catch those contested passes and to be able to move the ball down the field and throw for a lot of yards, it does bring that extra confidence that you can do that in a game and hopefully we can carry that momentum forward.โ€
