Aldon Smith Applying For Reinstatement To NFL

According to Jim Trotter of NFL Media, former 49ers and Raiders DL Aldon Smith is currently in the process of applying for reinstatement to the NFL.

Trotter mentions that Smith claims to be “clean and sober” since last September. Although, Smith was arrested in June 2019 due to suspicion of DUI.

People close to Smith tell Trotter that the lineman is “clean now, he’s good, and he wants to get back into the league.”

Smith has dealt with a number of legal matters over the past several years.

In 2018, Smith was booked into jail last week for violating a condition of his electric monitoring while he was out on bail. He showed up at the sheriff’s department with 0.40 blood-alcohol level.

Smith was later transferred to an inpatient substance abuse treatment center.

Before that, Smith pleaded not guilty to a domestic violence charge stemming from an incident that took place back in March of last year involving his then-fiancee.

The prior domestic violence incident involving Smith led to him facing charges of willful infliction of corporal injury, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism, which happen to all be misdemeanors.

Smith checked himself into rehab shortly after the incident with the help of his fiancee’s parents, but was later arrested for violating a protective order stemming from an alleged domestic violence incident.

The Raiders announced his release from the reserve/retired list soon after.

Smith, 30, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2010. He was cut loose by the 49ers shortly after a DUI incident in 2015, even though San Francisco picked up his fifth-year option.

Smith later signed a one-year deal with the Raiders that was worth up to $8 million, which was largely incentive-based. Oakland elected to re-sign Smith to a two-year, $11.5 million contract in 2016.

However, the Raiders placed Smith on the reserve/suspended list before cutting him loose in 2018.

For his career, Smith recorded 180 tackles, 47.5 sacks, an interception, five forced fumbles, a recovery and eight pass defenses over the course of five seasons and 59 games.
