Stephania Bell of ESPN reports that Washington QB Alex Smith has been medically cleared from his surgical team and is fully able to participate in any football activity.
In 2018, Smith’s career was left hanging in the balance after suffering a gruesome tibia and fibula fracture that later led to severe infection and sepsis.
“Everyone was in agreement that my bone was in a really good place,” Smith told ESPN. “I had healed a lot. They said that given the combination of the rod and where I was with the healing process, I had zero limitations and could even resume some football activities.
“To hear them say that from a life standpoint, they wouldn’t restrict me from doing anything — I could go skiing or snowboarding tomorrow if I wanted — then on top of that, to get the green light that I could practice, get contact, that I had healed up, that much was pretty wild to hear. I didn’t know if I would ever hear those words. For me, all eyes are on practice. That’s the next step. I have to go prove to myself and certainly to everybody else that I can go practice.”
Smith explained that this is just the first step and his focus is on practice right now.

Smith, 36, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2005. After seven years in San Francisco, Smith was traded to the Chiefs in 2013.
Smith was in the fourth year of his five-year, $76 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $10.8 million for the 2018 season when he was traded to Washington.
Washington and Smith later agreed to a four-year, $94 million contract that included $55 million fully guaranteed.
In 2018, Smith appeared in 10 games for Washington and completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 2,045 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. He has also rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown.
