According to Cowboys OLBย Anthony Spencer‘s agent, Jordan Woy, the two sides could have an agreement in place before the start of free agency in March.
โYou know the Cowboys,โ said Woy, perย ESPN’s Todd Archer. โIf they want somebody, they figure out ways to get it done.โ
Spencer played this year under the franchise tag and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. The Cowboys could use their tag on him again,ย but that means that they will need toย pay him more than $10 million next year. Dallas is in a pretty tough position financially, so it probably makes more sense for them to work on a long-term agreement, rather than franchise him for another season.
โObviously his goal would be to go back,โย said Woy. โHe likes it here. He loves to play here, but a little bit of it will be up to the team. Iโm sure we can get a deal worked out, but if we donโt heโll get a deal out there.โ
The Cowboys need to decide whether they want to stick with the 3-4 base defense, or make switch to 4-3 front now that Rob Ryan is out of the picture. Spencer’s market value is really related to him being by far the best 3-4 outside linebacker available. A switch to 4-3 defensive end may not be the best move for him, so there’s a chance that they could allow him to leave via free agency and look for a cheaper option in this year’s draft.
We have Spencer listed as the No. 16 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
