Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the Bengals are releasing veteran WR Brandon LaFell on Thursday.

LaFell’s agent, Jonathan Feinsod, tells Garafolo that they asked for his release.

We have been lobbying for his release for some time now and appreciate the Bengals granting our request,” Feinsod said.

Katherine Terrell reports that the decision to cut LaFell had nothing to do with any requests made by him or his agent to leave, and said it’s doubtful such a request would ever be granted anyway. Instead, a team source tells her that the move was more about giving the young receivers a chance and reps.

LaFell, 31, is a former third-round pick of the Panthers back in 2010. He spent four seasons in Carolina before joining the Patriots as a free agent back in 2014.

The Bengals signed LaFell to a one-year, $2,500,000 contract in 2016 and re-signed him to a two-year, $9 million contract that included $3.3 million guaranteed last year. He was set to make a base salary of $2.55 million for the 2018 season.

In 2017, LaFell appeared in all 16 games for the Bengals and caught 52 passes for 548 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 96 receiver out of 116 qualifying players.
