Reports from earlier in the week mentioned that a decision regarding Collins’ future with the Browns was likely coming in the near future, so this was expected.
Collins, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2013. The Patriots traded him to the Browns for a conditional fourth-round pick that can become a third-round compensatory pick.
The Browns then signed Collins to a four-year, $50 million contract that contained $26 million guaranteed and a $5 million signing bonus back in late January. He was set to make base salaries of $10 million (2019) and $12 million (2020).
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Collins will free up $9.25 million of available cap space while creating $2.5 million in dead money.
In 2018, Collins appeared in all 16 games for the Browns and recorded 104 tackles, four sacks, an interception, a forced fumble, a recovery and four pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 58 linebacker out of 92 qualifying players.
