Indications had been that Jones was unlikely to be back in Miami this year.
Last year, Jones has battled a variety of injuries this year and was the subject of numerous trade rumors before the deadline, so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.
Jones, 32, is a former fifth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2010. He was in the final year of his five-year, $30.81 million contract when the Dolphins signed him to a five-year, $60 million extension that includes $35 million guaranteed in 2017.
Jones stands to make a base salary of $11,485,000 for the 2020 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Jones will free up $7,540,000 of available cap space while creating $8,090,000 in dead money.
In 2019, Jones appeared in four games for the Dolphins and recorded 27 tackles and one pass defense.
