Adam Schefter reports that the Dolphins are signing CB Xavien Howard to a record five-year, $76.5 million extension that includes $46 million guaranteed.
This contract will make Howard the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
The Dolphins had said that getting a new contract in place for Howard was a priority and it looks like they were willing to reset the cornerback market to keep him long term.
Howard, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2016. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $6,128,038 and set to make a base salary of $1,285,641 for the 2019 season.
Howard would have been an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
In 2018, Howard appeared in 12 games for the Dolphins and recorded 35 tackles, seven interceptions, a fumble recovery and 23 pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 19 cornerback out of 112 qualifying players.
