Seahawks Releasing CB Richard Sherman

Adam Schefter reports that the Seahawks have informed CB Richard Sherman that he’s being released on Friday.

Yesterday, Bob Condotta reported that Seattle was likely to make this move by Friday, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise.

The Seahawks reportedly haven’t ruled out the possibility of bringing Sherman back at a lower salary, but he’ll get the opportunity to at least meet with some other teams and see what’s out there for him.

One team to watch for Sherman is the Patriots, as they could use another cornerback and reports from last year said he would have interest in possibly playing for them if the opportunity became available.

It’s worth mentioning that Sherman is working his way back from a season-ending Achilles tear, but the expectation is that he should be ready for the start of the 2018 season.

Sherman, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He is entering the final of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that includes $40 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Sherman will free up $11 million of available cap space while creating $2.2 million in dead money.

In 2017, Sherman appeared in nine games and recorded 35 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
