Browns Release Veteran DL John Hughes

The Cleveland Browns announced Tuesday that they’ve terminated the contract of veteran DL John Hughes.

Cleveland had to clear a roster spot after they signed QB Charlie Whitehurst and added C Austin Reiter off of the Redskins’ practice squad today.

Hughes, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Browns back in 2012. He was in the second year of his five-year, $15.6 million contract and set to make a bases salary of $2.4 million for the 2016 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Hughes will free up $2.2 million in available cap space while creating $700,000 in dead money.

This season, Hughes has appeared in one game for the Browns, but has yet to record a single a tackle.
