Rick Stroud reports that the Buccaneers have informed veteran DT Mitch Unrein that they’re releasing him with a failed physical designation.
Unrein, 31, originally signed on with the Texans as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming back in 2010. Houston waived him coming out of the preseason and was signed to the Broncos’ practice squad. Denver signed him to a futures contract then re-signed him as an exclusive rights free agent in 2014.
The Chargers signed him as an unrestricted free agent in 2015 to a two-year deal, but was among their final roster cuts. He later concluded a two-year contract with the Bears in 2017 and signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with Tampa Bay last offseason.
He landed on injured reserve during the 2018 preseason due to a concussion and never returned to the active roster.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Unrein creates $2 million in cap space and $1 million in dead money.
In 2017, Unrein appeared in 12 games for the Bears and recorded 31 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.
