Cam Newton Could Return To Practice Next Week, Panthers Consider Him Day-To-Day

Update:

According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers believe there’s a real chance QB Cam Newton can return to practice on Wednesday. The team considers him day-to-day, not week-to-week.

According to Jason La Canfora, the Panthers plan to keep QB Cam Newton off the field until he’s no longer at risk of reinjuring his foot.

La Canfora says the Panthers consider Newton week-to-week and will evaluate him again before practice on Wednesday. In the meantime, backup QB Kyle Allen will continue to start for Carolina.

Newton entered the season coming off of his second shoulder surgery in as many years. He also suffered a midfoot sprain in the team’s third preseason game that was re-aggravated in Week 2.

The Panthers and Newton have had a slow start to the season. Carolina is 0-2 while Newton has not thrown a passing touchdown and has negative rushing yardage so far in 2019.

Newton, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Panthers back in 2011. He entering the fifth year of his six-year, $118.47 million contract that includes $60 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $16.2 million and $18.6 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2019, Newton has appeared in two games for the Panthers, completing 50 out of 89 passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He has also rushed five times for -2 yards.
