Mike Jurecki of Arizona Sports is reporting that the Cardinals will cut veteran RB Adrian Peterson this offseason.
The Cardinals will get David Johnson back next year, who will reclaim his role as a focal point of the team’s offense, so it’s unlikely they would be willing to carry Peterson and his salary when he’ll be a backup.
Peterson carries a $3.5 million cap hit for the 2018 season, which breaks down to a base salary of $2 million and $1.5 million available in bonuses.
Peterson, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Vikings back in 2007. After 10 seasons in Minnesota, Peterson signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Saints and stands to make base salaries of $1 million and $1.05 million over the next two years.
The Saints elected to trade Peterson to the Cardinalsย before this year’s deadline after things didn’t go as expected in New Orleans. The Saints will receiveย a 2018 sixth-round pick from the Cardinalsย for Peterson.
According toย OverTheCap.com,ย releasing Peterson willย free up $2,881,250 of available cap space while creating no dead money.
In 2017, Peterson appeared in 10 games for the Saints and Cardinals and rushed for 529 yards on 156 carries (3.4 YPC) to go along with 11 receptions for 70 yards receiving and two total touchdowns.
