Cardinals May Consider Reworking Larry Fitzgerald’s Contract Following The Season

According to Darren Urban of AzCardinals.com, WR Larry Fitzgerald‘s contract could become a bit of an issue for the team after the 2013 season.

Urban notes that Fitzgerald will count $18 million against the Cardinals cap in 2013 and that figure will increase to a staggering $21.25 million in 2015.

Arizona had to work to clear cap space during the offseason, so they could end up being hamstrung by Fitzgerald’s contract. It’s worth noting that CB Patrick Peterson will need to be locked up at some point, which means cap space will be needed for at least one more significant contract.

With this in mind, the Cardinals could approach Fitzgerald about reworking his contract to reduce this cap figures. Arizona could pay him a lump sum upfront and then push the subsequent cap hits back a few years.

Fitzgerald, 29, is still one of the best offensive weapons in the game. He signed an eight-year, $128.5 million contract with $50 million guaranteed back in 2011. He still has six years remaining on that deal, but it’s worth noting that it includes an $8 million roster bonus in 2015, which is an indication that plan to readdress his contract before then.
