Chargers GM Tom Telesco said Thursday that they would like to open extension talks with QB Philip Rivers at some point this offseason.
“I can tell you he’s not going anywhere, so he’s going to be here,” Telesco said, via ESPN.com. “We’ll talk at the right point, as far as the moves we need to make in the offseason, the resources we have and how it all fits in. But yeah, he’s not going anywhere.”
Telesco mentioned that they’ve yet to speak with Rivers’ representatives about a new deal, but they haven’t seen any drop off in his play and would like to keep him for the foreseeable future.
“I haven’t seen a drop-off in abilities since I arrived here six years ago,” Telesco said, when asked how much longer he believes Rivers can play. “Six years I’ve been here, and he’s been playing better now than when I first got here. So I guess the sky’s the limit, as for how long he wants to play.”
Rivers has said that he thinks he can maintain his high level of play and he would like to be with the team for the opening of the new stadium in 2020.
“I certainly feel that’s something I want to be a part of and hopefully be helping us still winning football games,” Rivers said.
Rivers, 37, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.
Rivers is entering the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Rivers appeared in 16 games for the Chargers and completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,308 yards to go along with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 38 qualifying players.
We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Rivers as the news is available.
