Chargers Rumors: Ryan Mathews, Le’Ron McClain

Ryan Mathews

Chargers head coach Norv Turner is setting a high standard for third-year RB Ryan Mathews, according to Michael Gehlken of Union-Tribune San Diego.

The Chargers are bringing in more running backs for visits in the coming weeks, but Turner has said that Mathews could be the “guy who has that breakout, big-time year.

Mathews is another versatile player who has proven to be equally effective in both the running and passing games. The loss of Mike Tolbert will put even more pressure on him next season but hopefully that can be mitigated by some additional help.

Le’Ron McClain

Gehlken also writes that the Chargers are very excited about the signing of FB Le’Ron McClain.

I like his versatility and the fact that he has run the ball, said  Turner. “He also provides a receiver because he’s got good hands.”

The Chargers could use a solid blocking fullback and there’s no question that they should be able to use him better than the Chiefs did last season. M

Years ago, in 2008 while he was with the Baltimore Ravens, McClain was a actually rushed for 902 yards and added 10 touchdowns. McClain has only rushed the ball around 89 times in the past three seasons.
