Chiefs Opening GM Search Immediately, Will Consider Internal & External Candidates

Field Yates of ESPN is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs’ search for a new GM begins immediately.

  • Tom Pelissero says that the top internal candidates for the Chiefs’ GM vacancy are Mike Borgonzi and Brett Veach.
  • Mike Florio reports that the Chiefs have a “loose goal” of finding a new GM by the start of training camp.

Sources tell Yates that the Chiefs plan to consider both internal and external candidates for the post to replace GM John Dorsey, who was relieved of his duties earlier in the day.

The decision to move on from Dorsey was a shocker, considering that the success that they’ve had in recent years. However, it appears as though the Chiefs felt they needed to move in a new direction.

Dorsey was part of the decision to trade up for QB Patrick Mahomes in the first round of this year’s draft, which cost them a future first-round pick. Beyond that, their cap situation forced them to part ways with veteran WR Jeremy Maclin a few weeks ago, so those moves could have factored into the decision to part ways with Dorsey.

One internal candidate worth watching for the Chiefs is co-director of player personnel Brett Veach,. as he drew interest from the Bills during GM search over a month ago.

We’ll have more regarding potential candidates for the Chiefs’ job as the news is available.
