Damond Talbot of NFL Draft Diamonds is reporting that the Chiefs are signing P Tyler Newsome to a contract on Wednesday.
Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt is in the final year of his three-year, $7.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,95 million for the 2020 season, so it’s possible that Newsome could get a real shot to compete for the starting job this year.
Newsome, 24, wound up going undrafted out of Notre Dame back in April of last year. He later signed a three-year, $1.755 million contract with the Chargers.
However, Los Angeles later waived Newsome coming out of the preseason and sat out the entire year.
During his four-year college career at Notre Dame, Newsome totaled 9,909 punt yards on 225 attempts (44 YPA) over the course of 50 games.
