Colts Will Keep Assistant Coaches Who Were Joining Josh McDaniels

Update:

Colts GM Chris Ballard confirmed during his press conference on Wednesday that they will keep the assistant coaches that they hired as part of Josh McDaniels’ staff, even after he backed out of the agreement to be the team’s head coach.

We will not abandon them. They’re good coaches, good people and good developers of men,” Ballard said, per Mike Garafolo.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that the assistant coaches hired by the Colts including Matt Eberflus are expected to remain with the team and have signed contracts, despite the fact that Josh McDaniels elected to stay in New England.

This group also includes Dave DeGuglielmo (OL coach) and Mike Phair (DL coach) if they want to remain under the team’s next head coach.

McDaniels’ stunning decision to back out of the deal with the Colts leaves the team in a terrible spot. Indianapolis had been waiting weeks to make the agreement with McDaniels official and they’re now the only team without an head coach in place.

Beyond that, they now have some assistant coaches in place that were picked by McDaniels, which could be an issue for the candidates they meet with in the coming days.

Pro Football Talk reports that the Colts had feeling this could happen and now have three candidates ready to interview in next 24-48 hours.

According to Mike Garafolo, the Colts may turn their attention to Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, who was a “strong candidate” for the job and he previously worked with GM Chris Ballard in Kansas City.

We’ll have more regarding Colts as the news is available.
