Concern That Bills RB LeSean McCoy May Not Be Ready For Week 1

Sources have informed ESPN’s Josina Anderson that there’s concern right now that Bills RB LeSean McCoy may not be ready in time for the season opener.

McCoy suffered a hamstring injury  a few weeks back and Anderson’s source said that his MRI showed  “small tear.”

“They say it tore in a spot where it couldn’t have been any better for us,” Anderson’s source said. “It tore in a spot that is kind of high up, surrounded by stronger muscles in the glutes and things like that.”

McCoy reportedly is not at full speed in the team’s practice and is continuing to rehab his hamstring. However, there is concern about his ability to maintain his max “football shape” despite not practicing in full.

It’s way too early to say whether (McCoy) will play or not. He is doing a little bit more every day. But hell yes, I’m concerned about that,” Anderson’s source said. “I can’t say for sure he’s going to be with us Week 1. I can’t say that at all. It will take everything we got just to get him ready for game day, and then we get to game day (there’s) no way he can be in great football shape. So I think he will be on a pitch count, I think at the very best.

“I mean if he came around and just started feeling really, really, good heaven knows, but (we) have to look at all the contingency plans: putting him on a pitch count possibly, or, he’s not out there at all and we got to go without him and get the other guys ready-you just don’t know.

It’s worth mentioning that even with the concerns about McCoy, they are still game planning for him to be ready for the start of the season.

In the event McCoy isn’t 100 percent healthy, Anderson’s source said: “I would recommend that he doesn’t play because (we) need him for the rest of the year. (We) don’t need him at 75 percent and risk losing him down the line.

Bills HC Rex Ryan even expressed some doubt about McCoy’s status for Week 1.

“Well we certainly expect him to be ready to go, I hope,” coach Ryan said Monday, via Mike Rodak of ESPN. “If not then the next man has to step up.Boobie [Dixon] got a lot of reps out there today. Bryce Brown got a lot of reps today. So we will see. I am not going to put that all on one man. If he is not ready to go, he won’t be in there.

We’ll have more regarding McCoy and his status for Week 1 as the news is available.
