Contract Extension For Aaron Rodgers Remains An Offseason “Priority” For Green Bay

ESPN’s Adam Schefter mentioned on Tuesday’s NFL Live that the Packers are more likely to sign QB Aaron Rodgers to a four-year deal worth $100 million, via Zach Kruse.

“This is a very simple deal to do for Aaron Rodgers,” said Schefter. “There are many people around the league who are expecting a four-year, $25-plus million extension a year. … That’s how that deal is going to come down when it comes down.”

Packers’ president Mark Murphy mentioned that getting QB Aaron Rodgers signed to a long-term contract extension before the start of the season remains a “priority.”

“It’s a priority,” Murphy said, via the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. “I think as an organization, I think we all want to see that get done.

The Packers have shed a good amount of cap space in the past few weeks, but have spent very little on free agents up to this point. Expectations are that Green Bay will make Rodgers the highest paid player in NFL history, so they’ll clearly need as much cap room as possible.

“It’s not an issue at all,” Murphy said. “I think we’ve talked through with Russ and Ted and we have more than enough resources to do whatever they need to do.”

Clay Matthews another candidate to be locked up in the coming months, but it seems likely that Rodgers’ contract gets addressed first.

Joe Flacco, currently highest paid player in NFL history, received a six-year contract worth $120.6 million that included $52 million guaranteed. Previous reports indicated that Rodgers could command as much as $60 million guaranteed and possibly $140 million in total.
