Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reports that the Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott have had “little contact” since September when the last substantive talks unraveled and Prescott’s camp indicating that his asking price would only increase as the season plays out.
A source tells Robinson that Prescott turned down a contract from Dallas that would have compared favorably to the four-year, $128 million deal signed by Carson Wentz and the four-year, $134 million deal signed by Jared Goff.
Robinson notes that both Wentz and Goff received โtack-onโ deals that give their respective teams six total years of control. The Cowboys would like to do something similar with Prescott, but Robinson explains that it’s created a situation where the more years the Cowboys want of Prescott, the more they will have to pay him in terms of overall money, guarantees and average salary per year.
Prescott reportedly prefers a shorter contract that would allow him to continue to rotate into free agency and, in turn, ensure that his salary is in line with the market.
Robinson expects the next round of quarterback contracts to be pushing for $40 million per year, which is $5 million more than Russell Wilson‘s record $35 million per year salary.
Last we heard regarding Prescott, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the Cowboys and Prescott have made “no progress” on a long-term extension during the team’s off week and it appears as though he’s headed toward the franchise tag next year.
Rapoport added that while neither party has placed a deadline for extension talks, it’s “hard to imagine a new deal getting done” before next year.
Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2019, Prescott has appeared in 13 games for the Cowboys and completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 4,122 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 quarterback out of 35 qualifying players.
