Cowboys Sign LB Malcolm Smith, Place LB Luke Gifford On IR

Update:

Calvin Watkins reports that the Cowboys have signed LB Malcolm Smith to a contract on Tuesday.

Michael Gehlken adds that Cowboys rookie LB Luke Gifford has been placed on injured reserve with a fractured arm.

The Cowboys also signed OT Tyler Jones to their practice squad.

According to Jane Slater, the Cowboys have an interest in signing free-agent LB Malcolm Smith

Dallas has had some injuries at linebacker and Smith would provide depth given his familiarity with Cowboys DC Kris Richard from their time together in Seattle.

Todd Archer reports Dallas is working out Smith as well as free-agent LB Ray-Ray Armstrong on Tuesday.

Smith, 30, is a former seventh-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract with the Seahawks and was named Super Bowl MVP a few years ago before signing a two-year deal with the Raiders in 2015.

The 49ers signed Smith to a five-year, $26.5 million contract that included $13 million guaranteed last year. He stood to make a base salary of $3,750,000 for the 2019 season when his contract was restructured by the team. Smith was still released coming out of the preseason.

Smith caught on briefly with the Jaguars this year but was released again after just two games.

In 2018, Smith appeared in 12 games for the 49ers and recorded 35 tackles, no sacks and a pass defense.
