According to Adam Schefter, the Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott are not close to agreeing on a new deal and no extension for Prescott is expected in the near future.
Schefter adds there’s no doubt that the two sides will eventually agree to a deal, but that Dallas owner Jerry Jones‘ comments that a deal was “imminent” were premature.
There haven’t been any setbacks during negotiations, the two sides just have never gotten close. One of the sticking points between the two sides remains the length of the deal, with Dallas preferring a longer deal and Prescott seeking an extension more in line with the four years Rams QB Jared Goff and Eagles QB Carson Wentz signed for.
Schefter reports that given the way he’s playing now, Prescott is confident in betting on himself as he plays out a contract year.
Meanwhile, Dallas could potentially have the option to use both the franchise tag and the transition tag to keep Prescott and pending free-agent WR Amari Cooper depending on if a new CBA is agreed to before March or not.
Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Prescott appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards to go along with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 305 yards and six touchdowns.
We’ll have more regarding Prescott and the Cowboys as the news is available.
