On Tuesday, Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones told reporters that they want to get a long-term extension in place for QB Dak Prescott this offseason.
โYou look at a quarterback that has had the success heโs had,” Jones said, per Jon Machota. “Heโs done everything the right way. I think he deserves to have his contract looked at in a very progressive way.โ
It makes sense that the Cowboys would want to address Prescott’s contract this offseason, considering that they would be in a position to possibly have to franchise him in 2020.
Waiting on a new deal for Prescott could ultimately cost them more than working to get something done in the coming months.
Prescott, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Prescott has appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards to go along with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 305 yards and six touchdowns.
