Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the deadline has passed for OLB Markus Golden to sign with a team other than the Giants on Wednesday. However, Fowler says he has no plans to sign the May 5 tender today.
The May 5 tender allowed Golden to try to get a better deal from another team until July 22 “or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later,” per Ralph Vacchiano.
Vacchiano explains that it was widely believed that the last part meant July 25, which happens to be the first scheduled day of training camp for the Chiefs and Texans. However, rookies reported for training camp on Monday for the Chiefs and Texans, which is why today was the deadline.
This means that Golden now can either sign his one-year, $4.125 million tender with the Giants or not. If he doesn’t, he can’t sign with another team until Week 10 of the regular season.
Golden had been one of the best available free agents for over several months now. However, there was very little interest in him up to this point.
Golden, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2015. He played out the final year of his four-year rookie contract and signed a one-year, $3.75 million deal with the Giants after testing the free agent market for the first time in his NFL career.
In 2019, Golden appeared in all 16 games for the Giants and recorded 72 total tackles, 10 sacks, one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown and no pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 84 edge rusher out of 108 qualifying players.
