Broncos WRย Demaryius Thomas mentioned during an interview withย Dan Hellie of the NFL Networkย that he would consider taking aย hometown discount to stay in Denver.
“Of course, why not?” Thomas asked while on NFL Total Access. “Peyton is one of the best in the game, and I’ve been blessed to have him as my quarterback. I learned so much of him. Denver, of course I gotta take my hats off to them because they took a chance of drafting me in the first round.”
Thomas would be one of theย most sought after free agents in next year’s market, assuming the Broncos don’t use their franchise tag on him. However, it would be surprising to see accept a contract that would pay him less than a market value salary, even withย the opportunity to continue playing with Manning.
Theย counterargument here is that leaving for greener pastures, much like Eric Decker did last year when he left the Broncos to sign with the Jets, doesn’t alwaysย play out as though a player was hoping it would.
Remaining with the Broncos would giveย Thomas not only the ability to compete for Super Bowl titles while making a decent salary in the process.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sportsย previously reported the Broncos are likely to use their franchise tag onย Thomasย next year and continue to negotiate a long-term deal with TEย Julius Thomasย that should run them much less.
Demaryius,ย 26, is clearly one of the best receivers in the game and has earned a sizable raise from the Broncos. He’llย make $3.275 million during the final year of his rookie contract.
Over the course of 12ย games, Thomas has caught 88ย passes for 1,255ย yards receiving and 10ย touchdowns.ย We have both Broncos’ free agentsย listed in our Top 25 – ย 2015 Free Agents list.
