According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins want to re-sign free agent TE Dion Simsย and he expects to the two sides to eventually reach an agreement on a new contract at some point this offseason.
Sims previously mentioned that Dolphins HC Adam Gase told him they want to re-sign him to be their No. 1 tight end.
“He told me he wants me back as a No. 1,” Sims said, via the Miami Herald. “I want to be back. I have obviously proven myself to be a starting tight end in the league and want to continue in that role. Iโve done some great things this year and improved a lot.”
Even if the Dolphins bring Sims back, Salguero could still see them bringing in another to tight end to go along with their other options at the position.
There will be some notable free agent tight ends for the Dolphins to consider this offseason. However, Salguero doesn’t think guys like Vernon Davis, Jared Cook and Martellus Bennett will ultimately end up in Miami.
Instead, Salguero suggests Seahawks TE Luke Willson as someone who could be a good fit for the Dolphins.
Sims, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2013. He has played out his four-year, $2,627,552 contract and is now in position to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2016, Sims appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and caught 26 passes for 256 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 38 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
