Les Bowen mentions that Eagles RB Ryan Mathews is believed to be seeing his spinal surgeon on Monday and if it’s determined that he has healed from his neck operation, Philadelphia will likely release him.
The expectation has been that the Eagles will cut Mathews loose as soon as he’s medically cleared so this shouldn’t come as a big surprise.
If the Eagles were to move on from Mathews while injured, it would cost them $1.1 million more than if they waited until he’s capable of passing a physical.
Mathews, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Chargers back in 2009. After five years in San Diego, Mathews signed on with the Eagles and later received a three-year, $11 million contract extension with $5 million guaranteed.
The Eagles owe Mathews a base salary of $4 million for the 2017 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Mathews would free up $4 million in available cap space while creating $1 million in dead money.
In 2016, Mathews appeared in 13 games and rushed for 661 yards on 155 carries (4.3 YPC) to go along with 13 receptions for 115 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 44 running back out of 52 qualifying players.
