Eric Weddle Has No Plans To Retire, Cowboys Could Be Option

According to Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram, veteran S Eric Weddle has no plans to retire, despite being released by the Ravens on Tuesday.

Hill mentions that Weddle is an option for the Cowboys, who don’t want to pay top dollar for Earl Thomas. However, Hill says that Weddle won’t come cheap either.

It’s worth mentioning that signing him to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Weddle, 34, is a former second-round pick of the Chargers back in 2007. He played nine seasons for the Chargers before signing a four-year, $26 million contract that included $13 million guaranteed with the Ravens for the 2016 season.

Weddle was entering the final year of his contract and set to make a base salary of $6.5 million for the 2019 season when the Ravens released him.

In 2018, Weddle appeared in 16 games and recorded 68 tackles, one sack, no interceptions and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 17 safety out of 91 qualifying players.
