Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff mentioned during an interview with 92.9 The Game (per Vaughn McClure) that they have no interest in trading RB Tevin Coleman this offseason.
“We are not considering trading Tevin Coleman, period,’‘ Dimitroff said. “He’s an important part of this organization. And our focus is on this upcoming year, and trade is not in our thought process.”
It’s worth mentioning that Dimitroff previously said he could see a scenario where they pay Coleman, even after already locking up Devonta Freeman to a long-term deal last year. Although, it would be difficult to afford both of them at market-value salaries.
If the Falcons were to trade Coleman now, they could try to get a better return for him than what they would receive in terms of a compensatory pick in 2020 if they lose him in free agency next year. However, it sounds like they want to maintain continuityย at running back for the 2018 season and see if they can re-sign him at some point.
Coleman, 24, is a former third-round pick of the Falcons back in 2015. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $3.219 million contract and set to make a base salary of $791,268 for the 2018 season.
Coleman will be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.
In 2017, Coleman appeared in 15 games for the Falcons and rushed 628 on 156 carries (4 YPC) to go along with 27 receptions for 299 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.ย Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
