Falcons Sign Veteran LB Philip Wheeler, Release S Charles Godfrey

The Atlanta Falcons announced the signing of veteran LB Philip Wheeler on Tuesday, as well as the release of S Charles Godfrey.

Wheeler, 30, was taken in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Colts. He played out his rookie contract with Indianapolis before later catching on with the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent in 2012.

Wheeler later cashed in on a big-money deal with the Dolphins, but lasted just two years before he was released. The 49ers later took a chance on him this past April, but Wheeler was unable to make the team’s final 53-man roster.

In 2014, Wheeler appeared in 15 games and recorded 45 tackles for the Dolphins. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 18 outside linebacker in a 4-3 system out of 40 qualifying players.

Godfrey, 29, signed a one-year contract worth $1.5 million with the Falcons back in March, but he lasted just one week into the regular season before Atlanta released him.

The Falcons elected to bring him back a few weeks ago, but they could apparently use help at other positions.

This season Godfrey has appeared in one game and hasn’t recorded a single statistic.
